IBKR Autonomous Trading: Interactive Brokers lets connected AI trade in a separate account partition
Tessera · 2 November 2026

On 21 October 2026 Interactive Brokers announced IBKR Autonomous Trading, which lets eligible clients authorise a connected AI platform to find opportunities and submit orders without approving each trade. The AI trades only inside a dedicated AI Partition that the client funds from their main IBKR account, following instructions the client writes in plain language.
What happened
According to IBKR's press release (Business Wire, 21 October 2026), clients create and fund the AI Partition by transferring cash from their main account, without opening a new account or making an external deposit. A connected AI can then look across more than 75,000 listed stocks, options and ETFs globally and submit supported orders that match the client's instructions, within account restrictions and IBKR's risk safeguards. The release's example instructions include trimming any position above 10% of the portfolio back to 8%, and selling 30-day covered calls when a holding's implied volatility reaches its 52-week 90th percentile.
This builds on IBKR's existing AI Integration, which connects accounts to ChatGPT, Claude, Grok and Perplexity through the Model Context Protocol (MCP). In late July 2026 IBKR opened that connector to any MCP-compatible tool, such as Claude Code and Cursor (City AM, 28 July 2026). The difference is who presses the button. With the older connector, the AI drafts trade instructions and the client reviews and submits every order. In the AI Partition, the AI submits orders itself.
The details that matter
- Limits apply, but IBKR hasn't published them in the release. The press release says the feature launches with funding, account and eligibility limits that may change over time, and that availability depends on the IBKR entity and the client's country of residence.
- Eligibility. TokenPost (22 October 2026) reports that only individual, non-margin accounts qualify, with joint, retirement, advisor-managed, organisational and Lite accounts excluded. It says clients must first place at least 10 trades of $100 or more over two weeks in Review & Approve mode, where they approve each AI order themselves.
- A small start. On IBKR's 15 October earnings call, management said about 3,000 clients had been invited in the first days of a limited rollout, with eligibility to widen over the following weeks (AIM Media House, 22 October 2026).
- Revoking access doesn't cancel orders. TokenPost notes that cutting off an AI platform does not automatically cancel its pending or partly filled orders, and that clients remain responsible for every order in their account, including mistaken ones.
- The release names no AI platform for autonomous trading. It names ChatGPT, Claude, Grok and Perplexity only for the AI Integration. AIM Media House reports that any compatible MCP client can connect, so check what your own AI tool supports before relying on it.
What it means for algo and systematic traders
An AI Partition is an automated strategy whose rules are a paragraph of plain language, interpreted by a model you don't control. That makes the trade record the only reliable description of what the strategy actually does. Two clients can write similar instructions and get very different trades, and the same instructions may be read differently after the AI platform updates its model.
The partition structure helps here. Because the AI's trades sit in their own funded partition, separate from your own decisions, you have a clean record of what the AI did with a known amount of capital.
What to do now
- Compare against doing nothing. Measure the partition's return against simply holding the same cash in a broad index ETF over the same dates, after commissions. An AI that made money in a rising market may have done worse than buy-and-hold.
- Wait for enough trades. Ten or twenty trades can't tell skill from luck. Judge the record on a meaningful sample, and expect a few large winners to dominate the early numbers.
- Break results down. Split trades by session, weekday, time of entry, symbol and volatility. AIM Media House reports trading can cover overnight sessions as well as the day session, so check where the losses come from.
- Check your instructions against the fills. If you told it to trim positions above 10%, confirm it did so, and nothing else.
- Get the data out. The release doesn't say how partition trades appear in reports. Since the partition sits inside your existing account, check whether your Flex Query output includes its trades and whether they can be told apart from your own before you analyse them.
