Best Prop Firm Challenge Simulators (2026): Test Whether Your Strategy Would Pass Before You Pay

Which tools let you build or backtest a strategy and see if it would pass an FTMO, The5ers or Topstep challenge? 8 prop firm simulators compared on method, firms and price.

A prop firm challenge simulator replays a strategy, or your trading statistics, through a firm's rules (profit target, daily loss, maximum loss, minimum days and consistency) to estimate how often you would pass. As of November 2026, the tools fall into three groups. Tessera's Strategy Lab, LuxAlgo's Prop Firms tab, StrategyQuant X and Backtrex test a strategy's own backtest. LuxAlgo's free Prop Firm Sim and TradeTanto estimate pass odds from statistics you enter. FX Replay, Forex Tester and TradesViz let you practise a challenge by hand on historical bars.

If you want to build a strategy, backtest it and see whether it would pass a challenge in one place, the first group is the one to look at. If you already have results and just want quick odds, the second group is free and fast. If you trade by hand, the third group is practice, not a test of a strategy.

Features and prices were checked on each vendor's pages on 6 November 2026. Prop firm rules change often, so check the firm's own published rules before you buy a challenge.

A simulated pass rate is not a promise of a pass. Live fills, the firm's current rules and future markets all differ from the past, and leveraged trading carries a high risk of loss.

Why a single backtest is not enough

Whether a strategy passes depends heavily on when the challenge starts. The same strategy can pass in two weeks from one start date and breach the daily loss on day three from another. A useful simulator answers the question across many starts, either by starting a fresh challenge on many historical dates or by Monte Carlo resampling of the trades. It should also check limits during the day on open equity, because most firms measure daily loss intraday, not only at the close. Our guide to prop firm challenges for algo strategies explains which rules fail automated strategies most often.

Tessera Strategy Lab: best for building, backtesting and testing the challenge in one place

The prop firm challenge simulator is the account test inside Tessera's Strategy Lab, which is our product. You describe a strategy to TES, the AI strategy coach, or build it without code, backtest it on 1-minute to daily candles, then run the account test on the same backtest. It starts a fresh challenge on every week (or month) of the data, at up to 6 account sizes, and checks limits inside every candle on open equity, so an intraday dip that would have breached the daily loss counts as a breach.

You see the pass rate, the median days to pass, how many challenge fees you would expect to pay per pass, how close the worst day came to the daily limit and what a funded account would have paid out. A never-breach guard sizes trades down so the rules are never broken and shows what that does to the pass rate. The account test is on the Free plan and counts as one of its 5 backtests a week.

Where it is the wrong choice: if you trade by hand and want to practise under pressure, a replay tool fits better. Presets cover four challenges; other firms need their rules entered as a custom account. Launchpad, Tessera's bot runner, does not enforce prop rules on a live bot; you set its own daily loss and trade limits instead.

LuxAlgo Prop Firms tab: best for crypto prop challenges from a LuxAlgo backtest

Since October 2026, a strategy backtested in LuxAlgo's Vela platform shows which prop firm challenges its trades would pass, nearly pass or not fit, with days to pass, the closest call and how many tested start dates passed. Strategies can come from LuxAlgo's Quant AI or from Pine Script. It is the closest tool to a build-then-test workflow.

Watch for: LuxAlgo's example covers crypto challenges, it does not execute trades, and which plans include the tab is not stated.

StrategyQuant X: best for systematic traders already mining strategies

StrategyQuant X added prop firm analysis in build 144, and a free community plugin estimates pass odds, confidence intervals, time to pass and expected value for an FTMO-style 2-step challenge. It suits traders who already generate and test strategies in StrategyQuant.

Watch for: it is expensive desktop software, and firm rules are entered by hand.

Backtrex: best for a cheap sanity check on a discretionary setup

Backtrex infers a strategy from trades you mark on a chart and replays it over 5 to 10 years, flagging daily drawdown, overall drawdown and consistency breaches.

Watch for: it is a single historical path, so it does not show how much the result depends on the start date, and one of Backtrex's own posts describes a dedicated challenge mode as a future version.

LuxAlgo Prop Firm Sim and TradeTanto: best for free, quick odds

Both run 10,000 Monte Carlo challenge attempts from the statistics you enter. LuxAlgo's simulator also accepts an imported trade list (TradingView, MetaTrader, thinkorswim or CSV), supports static and trailing drawdown modes and is open source. TradeTanto has presets for most futures prop firms.

Watch for: neither builds or backtests a strategy. The answer is only as good as the win rate and average R you feed in, and resampling assumes trades are independent, which streaky strategies are not.

TradesViz, FX Replay and Forex Tester: best for practising by hand

These put you in a bar-by-bar replay with challenge rules enforced, so you can practise a challenge without paying for one. TradesViz can also run journal trades through a firm's rules.

Watch for: manual practice is slow and tests you, not a strategy, so it does not tell you how an algo would fare.

How to choose

  • You want to build or test an algo and see if it would pass: Tessera Strategy Lab, LuxAlgo's Prop Firms tab (crypto) or StrategyQuant X.
  • You already have results and want free odds in a minute: LuxAlgo Prop Firm Sim or TradeTanto.
  • You trade by hand: FX Replay, Forex Tester or TradesViz.

Before you buy a challenge, check the firm allows your style: see which prop firms allow algo trading, FTMO's algo trading rules, Topstep's rules and the consistency rule.

Frequently asked questions

Is there software that builds a strategy, backtests it and checks if it would pass a prop firm challenge?
Yes. Tessera's Strategy Lab lets you build a strategy in plain English or without code, backtest it on 1-minute to daily candles and run an account test against FTMO, The5ers or Topstep rules, on the free plan. LuxAlgo's Prop Firms tab does something similar for crypto challenges, and StrategyQuant X has prop firm analysis for strategies it generates.
How do I know if my strategy will pass a prop firm challenge?
Replay its trades through the firm's rules from many start dates, not one, and check the daily loss inside each day rather than at the close. A simulator gives a pass rate, days to pass and how close it came to breaching. It is a test of fit, not a guarantee.
Is there a free prop firm challenge simulator?
Yes. LuxAlgo's Prop Firm Sim and TradeTanto are free and work from statistics you enter. Tessera's account test is on its free plan and works from a strategy you build and backtest.
What is a good pass rate in a prop firm simulator?
There is no fixed threshold, but look at challenges per pass (how many fees you would pay for one pass) and the deepest dip against the daily limit alongside the pass rate. A strategy that passes often but regularly comes within a few percent of the daily limit is fragile.
