Topstep Algo Trading Rules (2026): Bots, API and Automation

Topstep algo trading rules as of November 2026: bots are allowed through the TopstepX API, but not from a VPS, not on Live Funded accounts and with no HFT.

By Tessera Trades · Updated · 9 min read

Yes, Topstep allows trading bots, with conditions. As of November 2026, Topstep's help centre says custom automated strategies and bots are allowed through the TopstepX / ProjectX API, but high-frequency trading is banned, the bot must run from your own device rather than a VPS or remote server, and the API is not available on Live Funded accounts. A rule your bot breaks counts exactly like one you break by hand.

Topstep's rules on automation, platforms and consistency have changed several times, and some third-party pages on this question still describe older versions. Everything below is taken from Topstep's own pages, with links and dates.

Topstep changes its rules and products often. This guide reflects Topstep's help centre as of November 2026. Read the current articles linked here before you start, and ask Topstep in writing about anything your bot does that is not clearly covered.

Does Topstep allow bots?

Topstep's TopstepX API Access article (dated 17 September 2026) is the main source. As of November 2026 it says:

  • Bots are allowed through the API. Custom automated strategies and bots can trade through the TopstepX / ProjectX API, subject to the platform rules and the ban on high-frequency trading.
  • The API is a paid add-on. It costs $29 a month, with a 50% discount for Topstep traders using the code on that page.
  • You own the bot. Orders sent through the API are final. Topstep does not provide coding or API support, and a rule violation is treated the same whether it came from you or from automation.
  • There is no sandbox. Topstep suggests testing on a Practice account.

The Trading Combine parameters article (dated 24 September 2026) also says automated strategies are allowed in the Combine with conditions, that Topstep will not help set them up or troubleshoot them, and that you should test on a Practice account first.

The three conditions that catch bot traders

1. No VPS, VPN or remote server

This is the rule most likely to surprise you. The API article says trading must originate from your personal device, and that the use of VPS, VPNs and remote servers is prohibited by Topstep's Terms of Use. Running automation on a VPS can lead to suspension or removal from the programme.

A private server is acceptable for work that does not touch order flow, such as storing data, backtesting, logging or a read-only dashboard. In Topstep's words, your server "can watch and record, but it cannot trade".

In practice, a bot on Topstep has to run on a computer you control, which has to stay on and connected while the bot trades. Any hosted service that places orders for you from its own servers falls under the same prohibition.

2. Not on Live Funded accounts

The API article says Live Funded accounts are not allowed to trade through the ProjectX API. Automation is possible in the Trading Combine and the Express Funded Account, which are simulated, but not once you reach a Live Funded account. Plan for that before you build your process around a bot.

3. No high-frequency trading or simulator exploits

Topstep's Prohibited Trading Strategies article (dated 10 June 2026) bans using software, AI, "ultra-high speed systems" or mass data entry to manipulate the platform or gain an unfair advantage. It also lists simulator exploits, which matter more for bots than for manual traders:

Banned behaviourWhy a bot might do it by accident
Scalping algorithms that exploit unrealistic simulated fillsA tick scalper backtested on perfect fills
Hundreds of rapid trades to gain queue positionA bot that re-quotes orders constantly
Trading gapped markets to catch stray fillsA breakout bot with no news or open filter
Relying on low simulated slippage for stop executionA strategy whose stops only work with zero slippage
Tight brackets or auto-breakeven to capture favourable simulated fillsVery tight targets with break-even moved after a few ticks

The same article bans trading your full maximum position size into major scheduled news, placing orders outside the best bid or offer, and account stacking (taking high-risk trades on one account until it fails, then moving to the next). Topstep says it may reject profit claims where it suspects abuse.

Topstep platforms: where can a bot trade?

As of November 2026, Topstep's programme page describes TopstepX as its platform, and its help centre treats TopstepX as the trading platform for Combine accounts. If a third-party page lists other platforms for Topstep, check Topstep's help centre before you build a bot for one of them.

For automation, the route Topstep documents is the TopstepX / ProjectX API. That means writing code that talks to the API yourself, or using a tool that does so from your own device.

The 50K Trading Combine rules your bot has to survive

These are the main rules for the standard $50,000 Trading Combine as of November 2026. Topstep also runs other products, such as Topstep Labs accounts with different terms, so confirm which one you are buying.

Worked example: the trailing Maximum Loss Limit

This is a hypothetical example with round numbers.

You start a 50K Combine at $50,000, so the Maximum Loss Limit (MLL) starts at $48,000.

  1. Day 1 closes at $51,200. The MLL rises to $49,200 ($51,200 minus $2,000).
  2. Day 2 your bot opens a trade while the balance is $51,200 and the trade goes $2,000 against you before the stop fills. Topstep monitors the MLL in real time and counts unrealised losses, so equity touching $49,200 fails the account, even if the trade would have recovered by the close.
  3. If instead the end-of-day balance reaches $52,000, the MLL reaches $50,000, your starting balance, and locks there.

The lesson for bots is that room to the limit shrinks as you make money, until it locks. A strategy that risks $1,000 a trade has two losing trades of room at the start, and the same two trades of room after a winning week.

Worked example: the consistency target

Topstep's consistency article gives the 50K maths: 55% of a $3,000 target is $1,650. If your bot's best day makes $1,800, the target rises to $1,800 divided by 0.55, about $3,273, and you keep trading until you reach it.

Bots that trade trends or news can produce one very large day. If that happens often in your backtest, a daily profit cap may cost you less than a raised target. Our prop firm consistency rule guide compares how other firms define it.

Topstep API trading bot: what you need

If you want to run a bot on a Topstep Combine, you need:

  1. A strategy with a tested edge after costs. Futures commissions and slippage on fast markets add up. See slippage in algo trading.
  2. Code that talks to the ProjectX API, written by you or a tool you run yourself. Topstep does not provide coding support.
  3. A computer you control, on and connected while the bot trades. No VPS for order routing.
  4. Risk limits in code that sit well inside the MLL, the maximum position size and any daily loss limit you set.
  5. A news and open filter, so the bot is not trading full size into major scheduled news or into gapped opens.
  6. A Practice account test before you pay for a Combine.

Can Tessera run a bot on Topstep?

No. Tessera's Launchpad, which deploys Strategy Lab strategies as bots, connects to cTrader and Liquid Brokers accounts only. It cannot place trades on Topstep accounts, and it does not apply prop firm rules to a live bot.

What Tessera can do is test whether a strategy fits Topstep's rules before you build anything.

Test it against Topstep's rules in Strategy Lab

The prop firm challenge simulator is the account test inside Strategy Lab, included on every plan, including Free. Its Topstep 50K preset is based on Topstep's published rules as of October 2026. It simulates the rules only; it does not connect to Topstep.

You build and backtest the strategy in Strategy Lab, without code, on futures or other markets. The account test then replays the strategy's trades through the account rules, starting a fresh run every week or month of your data, at up to 6 account sizes. Limits are checked inside every candle on open equity, so a trade that dips through a trailing limit and then recovers counts as a breach, as it would on Topstep.

It models the profit target, daily loss, maximum loss (static, trailing end of day, trailing intraday or locked), minimum days, time limits and best-day consistency. You see the pass rate, days to pass, challenges bought per pass, the deepest dip against the limits and how often the account ended below its start. An optional "never breach" guard sizes trades down to stay inside the limits.

Every backtest also runs Strategy Lab's validation checks, including an unseen period, cost fragility and a Monte Carlo report, so you can see whether the edge is real before you worry about the rules. A pass rate describes past trades under the rules. It is not a promise that the strategy passes a real Combine, and Topstep's current rules always take priority.

For other firms' rules on bots, see prop firms that allow algo trading and our guide to FTMO's algo trading rules.

Frequently asked questions

Does Topstep allow bots?
Yes, as of November 2026. Topstep allows custom bots through the TopstepX / ProjectX API in the Trading Combine and Express Funded Account, with no high-frequency trading and no simulator exploits. The bot must run from your own device, not a VPS, and the API is not available on Live Funded accounts.
Can I run a Topstep bot on a VPS?
No. Topstep's API article says VPS, VPNs and remote servers are prohibited by its Terms of Use for trading, and running automation on a VPS can lead to suspension or removal. A server may store data, backtest or log, but it may not place orders.
How much does the Topstep API cost?
As of November 2026, Topstep's help centre lists API access at $29 a month, with a 50% discount for Topstep traders using the code on its API article. It is billed separately from the Combine subscription.
Can I use a trading bot on a Topstep Live Funded account?
No. Topstep's help centre says Live Funded accounts are not allowed to trade through the ProjectX API, so automated strategies are not possible on Live Funded accounts at this time.
Is Topstep's Maximum Loss Limit trailing?
Yes, on the standard Trading Combine. It trails the end-of-day balance upwards, never moves down, and locks once it reaches the starting balance. It is monitored in real time and includes unrealised losses, so an open trade can breach it during the day.
